925,000 photos, sorted by rangers and AI

The problem Bininj and daluk rangers faced

Indigenous rangers in Australia's Warddeken Indigenous Protected Area run camera traps to monitor wildlife — but 70 to 95 percent of the roughly 925,000 images come back empty: wind, rain, leaves. Sorting them by hand took six months per survey round, stealing time from actual land management.

What the project does about it

MegaDetector, from Microsoft's AI for Good Lab, scans camera-trap images and finds animals, people, and vehicles — filtering out the blanks so rangers only review images with something in them.
